A Bidayuh Dayak or possibly an Iban Shield (as the motifs would suggest) This small shield is painted red with a nice simple expressive head on the top, the shape of the shield has a form that symbolizes the body of the figure and the base leaf motif probably symbolizes the legs. Within the shield, it displays repeated floral fern and scroll patterns similar to that of the Iban Sea dayak. On the rim, triangular relief patterns to finish off the border. Finally attached to the sides of the shield are 6 heirloom bells, probably for us in dancing. The reverse loop handle is good for an adult finger to go through. Deep Patina throughout and wear (red pigment) on the handle from lots of use. This shield dates back to Early 20th Century or possibly earlier. A rare and superb example!
