The people of New Ireland are known for their elaborate funerary rituals called malagan ceremonies, in which elaborate masks with carved and painted faces are adorned with yellow fibre crest for the masks hair that are made from an inland tree. This mask represents the tatanua, an exclusive male mortuary ritual, reflecting the social importance of the deceased and the capabilities of the living relatives that perform these rituals and feasts.
