| HORNBILL AND DRAGON MASK -TOPENG HUDOQ Dimensions: Height 17.5", Width 16" sku # B146
his is probably the most sacred of all Dayak masks in the Upper Mahakam , Kalimantan, the Hornbill and Dragon Mask "Topeng Hudoq". Possibly Bahau or Kenyah Dayak. A large mask painted in trade paints of red, off white and black with dragon and plant motifs. This mask has it's original bite stick present and has old patina from use, it is also an unusual mask as it is adorned with breast-like eyes as opposed to glass mirror discs usually used. These masks were almost always female, but it is an unsure subject, as the breast-like eyes in this mask and the usually adorned pendodulous earrings (not present here) would suggest female connotations, while the hornbill feathers and the fact that a man is always behind the mask has strong male connotations. Used during festivals to reunite the rice spirits with the growing of rice. A mask of Hiraang Lejau Midaang, a god from Apau Lagaan. Both top ear ornaments (fangs) on this mask is missing. Usually this mask would be worn with a skin or rattan hat inserted with the tail feathers of the hornbill, The feathers carry their own messages, One denotes a war leader and two a successful head hunter.Usually this mask would be worn with a skin or rattan hat inserted with the tail feathers of the hornbill, The feathers carry their own messages, One denotes a war leader and two a successful head hunter.
